SuperconductorsSC10 Meissner Effect Demonstration Kit
Meissner effect is one of the most intriguing properties of superconductors. This effect was first demonstrated by W. Meissner and R. Ochenfeld in 1933. It was observed that as a magnet is brought near a superconductor, the magnet encounters a repulsive force. In other words, the superconductor completely expels the magnetic field and behaves as a perfect diamagnetic. The magnet induces currents to flow in the superconductor that just balances the field that would have otherwise penetrated the material. SCI Engineered Materials offers a simple and inexpensive lab kit which demonstrates this phenomena based on High Temperature Superconductors. The Meissner effect demonstration kit (SC10) contains a YBa2Cu3Ox sintered disc, a small Nd-Fe-B magnet, a petri dish, and non-magnetic tweezers all packaged in a special case that can also serve as the demonstration stage. All you need to add is liquid Nitrogen! This kit can also be purchased with a thermos and without the SC10 special flat pack. Some applications that are envisioned using the Meissner Effect are mechanical devices such as motors and generators. Energy storage devices using Frictionless Bearings will also be available within a few years. For further information and ordering instructions please contact our sales representative.
