Press ReleasesSuperconductive Components, Inc. Reports Death of Founder and ChairmanCONTACT: COLUMBUS, Ohio -- December 13, 2002 -- Superconductive Components, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: SCCI), a manufacturer of advanced ceramics, optical materials, and high temperature superconductive and non- superconductive products, today reported that Dr. Edward R. Funk, Sc.D., founder and chairman of the Company, died on December 4, 2002 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Dr. Funk was widely known as an entrepreneur and founded several companies. In 1953, he established Johnston and Funk Titanium Corporation in Wooster, Ohio and later sold it to Mallory Sharon Titanium. He then started Astro-Metallurgical Corporation. Dr. Funk and his wife, Ingeborg, founded Funk Fine Cast in Columbus, Ohio in 1970, which they sold in 1988. Danninger Medical Company, which designed, manufactured and distributed orthopedic rehabilitation products, primarily continuous passive motion therapy devices, and other orthopedic rehabilitation products, was also founded by Dr. Funk and was incorporated in 1980. Cross Medical Company was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Danninger in 1986. Cross was a medical device company that developed and distributed spinal implant products. Cross merged with Interpore International of Irvine, California in 1998. Dr. and Mrs. Funk founded Superconductive Components, Inc. in 1987. He served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer until March 2002, when he hired Daniel Rooney as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Rooney was also appointed to the Board of Directors in March 2002. At the time of his death, Dr. Funk was Chairman of the Board. Dr. Funk was recognized in 1988 as "Entrepreneur of the Year" in Central Ohio. He received his doctorate of Science in Metallurgy degree in 1951 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then became an Assistant Professor at the institution. In 1965 he became an Assistant Professor of Welding Engineering at The Ohio State University, where he continued in that position for a number of years. Superconductive Components, Inc. operates through SCI Engineered Materials and manufactures advanced ceramics such as superconductors, ferroelectric and optical materials for use in wire, cable, batteries, wireless and fiber optics systems. The Company also provides materials for thin film applications used in photovoltaics, flat panel displays, electronic switches, hardness and decorative coatings.
